GT Projects and Due Dates: 

Parents, please check back often for any changes in due dates. Also, materials that your student needs to bring to class will be listed on here as needed!

*Each student should have 1 spiral and 1 folder for our GT class. 

 

* GRADES 1-4 are begining their projects.  Projects are DUE FRIDAY DECEMBER 4th!!!!!

 

* Grade 2 presentations are on 12/11/2015. Their projects should be on a poster board, and present information about their animal they want to add to the zoo, what the zoo would have to do to keep that animal, and WHY they think this will enhance the zoo-going experience (in other words, how would adding this animal make the zoo a better place). 

 

*Grade 3 presentations are on 12/08/2015.  Their presentations should be interactive and include: their pattern, where it's found, the mathematical concept it represents, and an explanation of that mathematical concept. 

 

*Grade 1 presentation will be on 12/10/2015.  

 

* Grade 4 presentations will be on 12/11/2015.  *note, attchment 6 is not required for their project.

Friday 9/04/2015-- Intruduction to the It's a Family Affair: A study of Culture and Tradition project

Tuesday 9/08/2015-- Start Phase I, Part 1 of It's a Family Affair Project  by reading Family Pictures by Carmen Lomas

Thursday 9/10/2015-- Continue Phase 1, Part 1

Firday 9/11/2015-- Continue  Phase I, by starting part 2 and brainstorming different family traditions

Tuesday 9/15/2015-  Thursday 9/17/2015 -- Continue Phase I,  part 3 by having the student bring something that represents one of their family's traditions, and have a discussion about traditions.

Tuesday 9/22/2015- Thursday 9/24/2015-- Discuss the origin of some famous traditions. 

 Tuesday 9/29/2015- Thursday 10/01/2015-- The student will share how, when, and why they honor the famous  tradition discussed the previous week. Then We will make a Venn diagram to compare different ways their tradition is honored.

Tuesday 10/06/2015-Thursday 10/08/2015--Go over family vs. national traditions using Family Pictures by Carmen Lomas Garza

Tuesday 10/12/2015-- Student will list family traditions. 

Tuesday 10/19/2015- Thursday 10/21/2015-- Student will finish listing their family traditions, and will answer a few questions about their favorite tradition.  Then, student will create a new tradition using the KWL Chart, and by answering the following questions:  Does the tradition honor a person or commemorate an event?  Who does it honor or what event does it commemorate?  When does the tradition take place?  Are there colors associated with it? What are those colors, and what do the colors represent?  Design your own symbol for the tradition. What does the symbol represent? How is the symbol celebrated or recognized?

Tuesday 10/27/2015- Thursday 10/29/2015-- COULD NOT MEET DUE TO CogAT testing.  

Tuesday 11/03/2015- Thursday 11/05/2015-

Student will think of a traditional dinner, create a drawing of the dish, and write about why it's important to them, and thank whoever makes the dish in their house.  THURSDAY CAN NOT MEET DUE TO CogAT

Tuesday 11/10/2015- Thursday 11/12/2015

 Student will write a thank you letter for whoever makes their favorite dish.  Then, student will then learn about the research process, and how they could use what they learned to create a new tradition. 

Tuesday 11/17/2015- Thursday 11/19/2015

MOCK STAAR.  PLEASE HAVE STUDENTS WORK ON THEIR PROJECTS AT HOME AND DURING THANKSGIVING BREAK.They are creating an activity to teach about a new Christmas tradition, and what it means to them.

Tuesday 9/01/2015-- Introductdion to GT

Thursday 9/03/2015--Begin Phase I, Part 1 of Mathematics in Nature project with a discussion of patterns in nature.  

Tuesday 9/08/2015--  Continue Phase I, Part 1 

Thursday 9/10/2015-- Start Phase I, Part 2, explore a patterns found in nature and how they connect to math. 

Friday 9/11/2015--Continue Phase I, Part 2 by studying pattern's origin, how it's formed, etc.  

Tuesday 9/15/2015- Friday 9/18/2015-- Beging exploriong patterns in nature with a Fibonacci pattern actifity. Start Phase I, part 3 by exploring various types of symetry found in nature.  

Tuesday 9/22/2015- Thursday 9/24/2015-- In small groups research a pattern.  Learn and practice good research habits. 

Tuesday 9/29/2015- Thursday 10/01/2015--

Students will present over a pattern observed last week, and begin selecting a topic for their math in nature projects. Each student should identify a natural pattern for more in-depth study.

Tuesday 10/06/2015- Wednesday 10/07/2015-- Create a research proposal. Go over fact and opinion

Tuesday 10/13/2015- Wednesday 10/14/2015-- Students will present their propsals, and  begin the reseaerch process of their project.  

Tuesday 10/19/2015- Wednesday 10/20/2015-- The students will continue their research and begin drawing conclusions.  

Tuesday 10/27/2015- Wednesday 10/28/2015--  COULD NOT Meet due to CogAT testing.  

Tuesday 11/03/2015- Wednesday 11/04/2015

The students will begin designing and creating their projects.  They will develop their display or activity that they will be presenting. 

Tuesday 11/10/2015- Wednesday 11/11/2015-- 

Students will continue creating their projects, and make sure their work cited page is completed.

Tuesday 11/17/2015- Wednesday 11/18/2015-- MOCK STAAR.  PLEASE HAVE STUDENTS WORK ON THEIR PROJECTS AT HOME AND DURING THANKSGIVING BREAK.  Students need to complete an interactive display or activity that teaches their class about their patterns, and the mathematical concept that the pattern represents.

Monday 8/31/2015 --Introduction to GT

Tuesday 9/1/2015--   Start Phase I Part 1 of The Secret Lives of Publich Spaces project with a discussion of publich spaces. 

Friday 9/4/2015-- Continue exploring the concept of public spaces by listing public spaces, their history, and what they are used for.  

Tuesday 9/08/2015-- Phase I, Part 2 researching the history of a public space.  

Friday 9/11/2015-- Continue researching the history of public space.  

Monday 9/14/2015 -  Friday 9/18/2015-- Start Phase I, part 3 by showing presentation given by a city park offical.  The video will be then used for a class discussion.  Start Phase I, part 4 by creating a timeline of the public spaces discussed.  

Monday 9/21/2015- Thursday 9/24/2015 (Friday is a half-day)-- Create a timeline depicting the history of the park/public space.  Take a virtual tour of a public space. 

 Monday 9/28/2015- Friday 10/02/2015-- We will record measurements, natural and man-made structures, postulate hypothesis on the natural organisms and food chains within the space, and list  possible additions or changes that might improve the space. Depict these findings through maps,diagrams and sketches.

Monday 10/05/2015- Thursday 10/08/2015-- Students will interview parents about a public space and present their interview.  

Monday 10/12/2015- Thursday 10/15/2015-- Will not not meet due to Columbus Day, and Workshop. 

Monday 10/18/2015- Thursday 10/21/2015-- Students will creat a proposal about a park improvement.  

Monday 10/26/2015- Thursday 11/05/2015-- COULD NOT MEET DUE to CogAT testing.  

Monday 11/09/2015- Thursday 11/12/2015-- 

As a class students will select a proposal topic.  Students will begin brainstorming about what type of project they will create. 

Monday 11/16/2015- Thursday 11/19/2015--MOCK STAAR.  PLEASE HAVE STUDENTS WORK ON THEIR PROJECTS AT HOME AND DURING THANKSGIVING BREAK. Students are creating a project activity to teach about the new animal they have research, and what the zoo would need to do to keep that animal.

Wednesday 9/02/2015-- Start Phase I, Part 1 of the Enigmas project with a discussion of egnimas, such as the Marfa's Lights.  

Thursday 9/03/2015-- Continue Phase I, Part 1 by exploring other enigmas in nature.  

Wednesday 9/09/2015-- NWEA TESTING

Thursday 9/10/2015-- Phase I, Part 2, Students will explore 8 enigmas, and present over 1 enigma.

Monday 9/14/2015 - Friday 9/18/2015 --Continue Phase !, part 2 by choosing as a class an enigma to explore. Then two-three groups will explore differnet enigmas and present their findings. 

Monday 9/21/2015- Thursday 9/24/2015-- Explore the meaning of the word eginma.  

Learn about good reserach practices.  

Monday 9/28/2015-Thursday 10/01/2015-- Students will research the meaning of enigma and how it relates to one of the discussed enigmas.  They will answer the following questions:

 What is the meaning of the word “enigma”?

 What is still not understood about the enigma?

 In what ways is the information incomplete or lacking explanation?

Monday 10/05/2015- Friday 10/09/2015--

Students will continue answering guiding questions: 

How would you describe the enigma?  How long have people known about it?  How do scientists from different fields explain the enigma?  How are the viewpoints the same? What are their differences?  How do ideas from across the disciplines contribute to our understanding of the enigma?  What dilemmas or controversies are involved in this enigma?  What viewpoints can be identified that reflect bias, prejudice, and discrimination?  How has understanding of the enigma changed over time? 

Students will also explore F act VS. Opinion

Monday 10/12/2015- Friday 10/16/2015-- Columbus Day, Students will come up with a hypothesis, and complete Attachment 4, or a research proposal. 

Monday 10/18/2015- Friday 10/21/2015-- Students will begin researching, and teseting their hypothesis.  

Monday 10/26/2015- Friday 11/06/2015-- COLD NOT MEET due to CogAT testing, and conference. 

Monday 11/09/2015- Firday 11/13/2015-- Students will begin creating and designing a project to test their hypothesis (see attachment 6 and 7).  They will then think of an activity that can be used to teach about their chosen enigma. 

Monday 11/16/2015- Friday 11/19/2015-- MOCK STAAR.  PLEASE HAVE STUDENTS WORK ON THEIR PROJECTS AT HOME AND DURING THANKSGIVING.  Students need to complete their board games that will be teaching about their chosen enigmas.
